Dear Girl #01 — You are already loved.

A letter to my younger self about love.

*In this series of letters to my younger self is all the advice, encouragement, etc, I wish someone had imparted on me when I was growing up from a scared and traumatized little girl to a lost and hurting young woman who didn’t know God. I write these letters in hopes it will bring healing, not only to myself, but to others needing to hear these same words. 🤎 (Spoiler alert: God saved me from the pit!)*

Dear girl,

As you know, love is such a powerful thing. No, not thing… love is a visceral experience. We all want to be loved. All we ever want is to be loved, right? (Or at least that’s what we think. Or maybe it’s what society tells us to think.) Every human on earth has an innate need and longing for love. You know that by now. That’s actually the way we were made by our wonderful Creator. But nobody ever told you that, did they? Nobody ever told you that the same God who made you also loves you with an immense, steadfast, and perfect love.

I know this is hard for you to believe. You feel so unlovable. How could the God who created the universe and is Holy and Almighty love you? The thing is, dear girl, His love for you does not depend on you! I know you’re thinking that makes absolutely no sense, but hear me out. In order for any of it to make sense, you need to know who God is. I think this summarizes it best:

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

And this:

“The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,” Exodus 34:6

You see, love is who God is. It’s part of his character. So, because God is intrinsically loving, He loves all of His creation. What’s more, God loved you SO much He sent His Holy & righteous Son to die for your sins! Jesus paid the debt you owed the Almighty Holy God. What debt? It’s hard to hear at first, but the wages of sin is death, and we have ALL sinned. There is no one righteous. A Holy God and sin cannot co-exist. And He wants us near because we are His beloved creation.

Dear girl, you are already loved! You don’t have to chase love or try to get it from those who cannot or will not give it to you. You have the purest form of love in God, and you don’t have to perform, achieve, or say or do the right things for Him to love you. He does not withhold His love.

You can finally rest in God’s love. You don’t have to strive. You don’t have to wander aimlessly. There is hope. So take a deep breath, drop your shoulders, and unclench your jaw. Let go of the anxiety because you’re already loved.
