What Shape Does Your Creativity Take?

Every single person is creative in their own way and inspiration is everywhere (even in watching juice from cherries bloom in the leftover kitchen sink water)!

I haven’t been writing much — really at all - lately. I haven’t felt very creative. I haven’t been making art (it doesn’t feel too good). But, something has been happening and the wheels have been turning. It just looks different. My creativity lately has been taking the shape of coming up with coffee recipes and ideas for hosting get-togethers (namely for my birthday, which is coming up), and donut flavors (after a visit to a donut shop).

I often tell myself that I’m just not as creative as I’d like to be (I know, I gotta cut that out. Send help, k?). I hear the same sentiment from a ton of people: “I’m not creative at all.” It’s a lie! Everyone is creative in their own way. Creativity comes in many shapes, forms, sizes, and doses! It is a God-given gift that everyone has access to.

What is Creativity?

Creativity is a God-given gift that everyone has access to.

Why? Because every human is imago Dei - the image of God (whether they accept this as fact or not). The God of the universe (the God of the Bible) is the ultimate Creator - He created everything, including you, me, everyone and all things. He created all humans in His image, which means all humans possess some of the same qualities that are true of God. Notice I said some.

Being made in His image does not mean we are God-like. We are not just like Him. But He made us with the capacity to share in some of His qualities like love, reasoning, mercy, relationality,and creativity.

Often, creativity is put under so much pressure because we make it out to be this mysterious, bigger-than-life, fleeting thing. We may think if something or someone will earn the “creative” label, it must be fresh, new and exciting, and most of all, original. (BTW, Ecclesiastes 1:9 says there is nothing new under the sun.) However, I don’t think creativity has to be earned because it’s already been given to us by our Creator.

On a fundamental level, creativity is the ability to create.

If you can solve a problem, any sort of problem, you’re exercising your creativity by creating a solution to the problem. If you love to cook and try new flavor combinations, you’re creative. If you’re funny and witty, you’re creative. The fact that anything at all exists in this world, besides the natural, is a testament to human creativity: culture, buildings, systems, advancements in technology, etc. It’s just different shapes of the same thing.

Different shapes for different people

Lately, my creativity has taken on a bit of a culinary shape. My brain has been busy conjuring up coffee drink recipes (especially since I got a new espresso machine). I’m determined to make a latte or cold brew that actually tastes like flan. The ones I’ve tried in coffee shops just fall flat and taste mainly of caramel. (If I wanted a Caramel Frappuccino I’d just go to Starbucks, thank you very much.) I’ve come up with a recipe, which I have yet to test, that I think will deliver some real flan flavor.

One day on my way home last week I stopped at a donut shop that sells mochi donuts. They had a notepad and pen on the counter with a sign asking people to get creative and write flavor suggestions. After I got my donuts, I wrote my suggestion (a filled coconut rose panna cotta donut), and on the way home my brain kept buzzing with ideas for donut flavors. I couldn’t turn it off! But also, I mean, I love donuts. Apparently, I couldn’t stop thinking about one particular flavor and had to make note of it to execute later: a pumpkin donut with a white chocolate orange glaze.

Another shape to my creativity has been that of event planning. This summer I really wanted to host an Italian dinner party, so I went to work thinking up a menu and decor. I also made a playlist for it, of course! Check out the inspo I found on Pinterest:

CUTE!!! I’ve been trying to plan something for my birthday and I had a couple ideas, but I may not be able to do them. One of the ideas is for a 90’s nostalgia party because that would be just. so. much. FUN. Once I get an idea for an event, my brain goes all in and it’s all I can think about for a while. It’s so fun thinking of themes, colors, decor, activities, music, and of course, the food (since I also love to cook & bake).

Inspiration everywhere

One of the donuts I purchased was a cornbread-flavored donut with a honey butter glaze. And I’m not kidding, it was one of the best things I think I’ve ever put in my mouth. Upon taking a bite, I instantly thought: “I need a coffee with this.” Suddenly my brain went, ooh! cornbread-flavored coffee!! Then proceeded to come up with a recipe for cornbread cold brew (whiicchh I have also yet to test).

As I was washing and pitting sweet red cherries over my sink the other day, I was captivated by the way the juice from the cherry dripped down into the leftover water in the sink and “bloomed” in the water. The color was so vibrant. The pull of the water spreading said color, mesmerizing. So, I took some tan-toned paper, water, and…cherries…and got to work.

Yeah, I used actual cherries! I probably won’t be doing that again! Could I have found a way to do this that wouldn’t stain my fingers?? Yes. Yes, I could’ve. I don’t know if it will turn into anything, but the process was fun.
